Overview

VoipTech approached me to redesign their telecommunications app with a focus on simplifying international calling, e-SIM management, and virtual number services. The existing app had usability issues and users found it challenging to manage multiple phone numbers and understand pricing structures.

Problem

Users struggled with complex navigation, unclear pricing models, and difficulty managing multiple virtual numbers and e-SIMs across different countries.

Goal

Create an intuitive VoIP communication platform that simplifies international calling, e-SIM activation, and virtual number management for global users.

Research & Discovery

I conducted comprehensive user research to understand the pain points of international travelers, remote workers, and businesses needing global communication solutions:

User interviews revealed common frustrations

Affinity mapping to identify key themes

Key Insights

Complexity Overwhelms Users: 78% of users found existing eSIM apps confusing with too many plan options and unclear pricing
Trust Issues: Users expressed concerns about call quality, data security, and service reliability
Feature Overload: Existing solutions tried to do everything, resulting in cluttered interfaces
Onboarding Friction: Average onboarding time for competitor apps was 8-12 minutes, causing 40% drop-off rates

Information Architecture

Based on research findings, I restructured the app's information architecture to create clear pathways for the core functions.

Old Problems:

All features buried in a single menu
No clear distinction between e-SIM and virtual numbers
Calling features scattered across multiple screens

New Solution:

Bottom navigation with 5 clear categories: Home, Messages, Calls, e-Sim, Numbers
Dedicated screens for each service type
Quick access to top-up credits from anywhere in the app
Contextual help throughout the experience

Ideation & Wireframing

Based on research findings, I created wireframes focusing on three core features: goal visualization, financial education, and automated savings tools.

User testing of wireframes helped validate the core information architecture and identify areas for improvement before moving to high-fidelity designs.

Visual Design

The visual design focused on clarity, accessibility, and a friendly approach to finances. I developed a clean UI with carefully chosen color psychology.

Lessons Learned

Throughout this project, I gained valuable insights about designing for telecommunications and global users:

Progressive disclosure: Breaking complex telecom concepts into simple steps significantly improved completion rates
Visual progress indicators significantly improve goal achievement
Micro-learning modules are more effective than lengthy tutorials
User testing early in the process prevented major revisions later

The VoipTech redesign demonstrates how user-centered design can transform a complex technical product into an accessible solution that serves global users. By focusing on clarity, transparency, and progressive disclosure, we turned a confusing telecommunications app into a trusted platform that empowers users to stay connected worldwide.
